Short History of Sports Medicine at Karolinska Institutet

Sweden, and Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, has a long history of prominent research on sports injuries. In the 1930s, Ivar Palmer published his famous book on ligament injuries in the knee joint, particularly anterior cruciate ligament injuries, and defended his doctoral thesis at Karolinska Institutet in 1938. He presented biomechanical research on the function of the knee joint. The word “biomechanics” had not yet been invented at that time. Therefore, Ivar Palmer titled a chapter in his book “The light thrown on injuries to the ligaments by laws of mechanics and by experiments.” In the 1950s and 1960s, Rolf Ljungqvist, Sten-Otto Liljedahl, and Lennart Broström made significant contributions. In the 1970s and 1980s, Ejnar Eriksson and Jan Gillquist, both at the Karolinska Hospital and the Karolinska Institutet, continued to study other types of sports injuries together with their many doctoral students. They also conducted a series of new studies on ligament injuries. In the late 1980s, Ejnar Eriksson presented the idea of a sports medicine center that would encompass both clinical practice and research, but it was not until the summer of 2007 Stockholm Sports Trauma Research Center became a reality.
